Teens struggle with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation at an increasing rate and often need more support than just friends and family.

Though it’s common for teens to shy away from approaching their parents with their problems, this makes it hard to differentiate if your teen is experiencing depression or anxiety, or struggling to navigate the pressures that many face in their teen years.

Your teen may be more distant from you or the family. Their grades may be falling. They may stay in their room more often. They might be reacting negatively to a basic request like cleaning their room. Everything you’ve tried hasn’t worked, and it’s left you feeling confused on how best to help them.

We are here to tell you that it’s okay! It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers.

The most important thing is that you recognize you may need to call in reinforcements. Parents are often left overwhelmed, but in reality, your teen may be overwhelmed too. They’re in the process of a major transformation– a transformation that we’ve all experienced– and they may need some extra help along the way. Teen Counseling in Atlanta can help to provide the support and skill building your teen needs to navigate their ever-changing environment.

Our goal in teen counseling is to ease the line of communication between parents and teens, so your teen can feel safe and understood as they grow.

Throughout counseling, your therapist may see your teen individually, with parents, or with the whole family. Family counseling can be an integral part to the growth and healing of a teen in the therapy process. Oftentimes, struggles are rooted within the family system. The family as a whole may need some therapeutic intervention in order for the teen to feel supported. It is vital for parents to take an active role in the therapeutic healing of their teen. This may require some self-reflection and flexibility in your parenting styles. Your therapist will guide you through this process and educate you on the best approach for your teen.

Our Atlanta Teen Counselors also help teenagers become more emotionally competent.

It’s frustrating to not have the ability to communicate exactly how you feel. Sad, mad, and happy can be broken down to deeper emotions that better explain how or why they feel the way they do. We will work with your teen to develop different emotionally cognitive skills by utilizing evidence-based methods such as DBT and CBT.

FAQs about Teen Counseling

How does Teen Counseling work?

Your teen’s therapist’s main goal is to provide a safe and supportive space for your teen to express themselves and their needs. They will also help your teen build skills like confidence, communication, and problem solving by using evidence based techniques and interventions like CBT and DBT. Often, teens find the therapy process even more impactful when their family or parents are involved and supportive during this time. Your teen’s therapist will also work with you as the parents and your teen to determine their goals in therapy and needed areas of help.

When is Teen Counseling needed?

If you’re struggling to communicate with your teen, have noticed aspects of your teen’s life impacted by issues like peer pressure, anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, or they’ve openly expressed needing support, teen counseling can be hugely beneficial. Our skilled teen counselors help to give your child the space and support needed to build their confidence as they develop into themselves.

How much does Teen Counseling cost?

Cost varies depending on our therapists, but you can expect a range of $120-$200 per 50-minute session. Your teen’s therapist may request additional sessions with you, their parents, and your teen in order to establish a line of communication or work on counseling goals together. All of our therapists offer sliding scale options when finances are an issue.

How long does the Teen Counseling process take?

This is unique to each teen and their needs and goals in the counseling process. Some teenagers develop the needed skills or problem solve their issues in 6-8 sessions, while other teenagers are looking for a continuing level of support. Each therapist will work with you and your teen to determine how to best reach their goals for therapy.
