About Therapy Services at Fava Counseling

At Fava Counseling Associates, we understand that beginning therapy can feel like a big step. Our goal is to make the process clear, comfortable, and supportive from the start.

Below, you’ll find answers to the questions we’re asked most often about individual therapy, couples counseling, family therapy, and telehealth sessions available throughout Georgia.
Whether you’re new to therapy or returning after some time away, these FAQs are designed to help you feel informed and confident as you begin your counseling journey.

How do I get started?

If you’re ready to begin therapy, getting started is simple. You can call or text our office at (404) 257-6474 to connect with our Intake Specialist, who can schedule your first appointment or consultation. If you’re unsure which therapist might be the best fit, they’ll ask a few questions and help match you with the right clinician. You can also schedule directly through our online booking calendar for a first session or a free 15-minute phone consultation.

How much do therapy sessions cost?

Each therapist sets their own rate based on experience, credentials, and specialized training. Standard 50-minute sessions range from $135 – $200, depending on the therapist.
Some therapists offer a limited number of affordable counseling or sliding-scale (reduced-fee) appointments for clients with financial need. Please discuss this option during your consultation call if applicable.

When are you available for sessions?

Our therapists offer appointments Monday through Friday, during the day and evening. Some also provide Saturday availability.
Availability can vary by therapist, so the best way to check open times is through our online scheduler.

Are sessions in person or virtual?

We provide both in-person therapy at our Sandy Springs/Buckhead office near Chastain Park in Atlanta, and online counseling sessions by secure video for anyone located in the state of Georgia.
Since our therapists are licensed in Georgia, we are unable to see clients located outside the state.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

Yes. All of our therapists offer evening sessions, and several also provide weekend availability to accommodate busy schedules.

What forms of payment do you take?

We accept credit, debit, and checks, as well as HSA and Flexible Spending Account cards.
Cash payments are not accepted.

What if I have to move or cancel an appointment?

You can cancel or reschedule with at least 24 hours’ notice without charge.
If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, the full session fee applies. Please notify your therapist as early as possible to avoid late fees.

Do you accept health insurance?

We do not bill insurance directly. However, many clients use their out-of-network benefits for partial reimbursement. Your therapist can provide a Superbill to submit to your insurance company.
We recommend calling the number on your insurance card to confirm coverage for “out-of-network mental-health providers.” Note that insurance reimbursement requires an official diagnosis code, which becomes part of your permanent medical record.

Why don’t you accept insurance?

Insurance requires a formal diagnosis code and may request detailed session information or limit the number of covered visits.
To maintain client privacy, flexibility, and control over treatment, we operate on a self-pay model. This allows us to protect your confidentiality and offer reduced-fee sliding-scale options when needed.

What is a sliding scale and how does it work?

A sliding scale allows therapists to adjust session fees for clients with financial need. Each therapist reserves a limited number of reduced-fee slots.
If you’re interested in therapy but cannot afford the regular rate, please contact us to ask about sliding-scale availability or to be placed on a waiting list if all reduced-fee spots are full.

What’s a telehealth session?

A telehealth session is a therapy appointment held through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Our licensed Georgia therapists can provide telehealth to anyone located within the state.
You’ll receive a secure video link about 10 minutes before your session. Learn more about online therapy in Georgia. If you prefer phone sessions due to internet issues, your therapist can accommodate this when possible.

Are telehealth sessions as effective as in-person sessions?

Yes. Research and our clinical experience show that telehealth therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions.
Telehealth can be more convenient, helping clients stay consistent without Atlanta traffic or travel time.

What should I expect during the first visit?

Your first session serves as an in-depth consultation. Your therapist will ask questions about your history, goals, and reasons for seeking counseling. You’ll also review confidentiality policies and what to expect from therapy.
This session helps you and your therapist get to know each other and outline your goals together. You can learn more about our team of therapists before your first visit.

Do I need to arrive early to fill out paperwork?

No. All new-client forms are completed online before your first session via our secure SimplePractice client portal.
You’ll receive a link after booking to complete the forms in about 15-20 minutes.

I’ve never done therapy before. What should I expect?

It’s normal to feel nervous before starting therapy! Sessions are conversational, supportive, and focused on your goals.
Our therapists create a warm, non-judgmental space while providing insight, tools, and feedback. Most clients notice positive progress after just a few sessions.
We also write articles about therapy if you’d like to learn more.

How long does therapy take?

The length of therapy depends on your personal goals. Most clients attend weekly sessions for at least 8 sessions or several months, while others continue longer-term for ongoing support.
Your therapist will check in periodically on your goals and progress to tailor the process to your needs.
